Summer Safety Tips for Seniors

Summer brings warmer weather and many look forward to participating in outdoor activities. While getting sunlight is important, too much heat is not safe for anyone. The hot weather is not always the best for seniors and people suffering from health problems such  as diabetes, and heart/lung diseases. Caregivers of the elderly have to be aware of the heat related diseases and summer safety tips to ensure they are healthy and safe this summer.

  1. Staying Hydrated 

Dehydration is a serious health issue because it can impact short-term/long-term health issues, increase the risk of constipation, kidney stones, and liver damage. Staying hydrated is important to avoid the risks of dehydration and to live safely from the summer heat.  

  1. Stay Indoors 

In summer, safety tips for seniors are important to remember because of  high humidity and hot weather. It is important to stay indoors to avoid exposure to extreme temperatures.  Think about including some fun indoor activities such as board games, reading, and learning arts and crafts.

  1. Use sunscreen while outdoors 

Always apply sunscreen of SPF 30+ before being exposed to the sun. Wearing a hat and sunglasses are recommended to protect the face from the sun’s rays. 

  1. Stay in an air-conditioned place

As people age, their ability to regulate temperature becomes impaired due to natural aging, chronic diseases, or medicinal usage. In order to stay safe, it’s essential for seniors to stay cool inside with an air conditioning system.  

  1. Check the forecast before going out 

When planning to go out, it is necessary to check the weather forecast. By doing this, seniors can know what to expect of the weather, dress appropriately and plan the schedule accordingly. 

  1. Keep bugs at bay 

It is common in summer that your loved one may want to spend time outside in the evening. When outdoors it’s necessary to use bug spray or repellents to help seniors to be protected from insect-borne diseases. 

  1. Identify the side-effects of prescriptions 

While every medicine is important, it’s necessary to verify if any medication can make seniors sensitive when exposed to the sun. For Seniors it is vital to follow the precautions to avoid health problems.  

  1. Know the early signs of heat-related illness 

Overheating can result in heat stroke and heat exhaustion among seniors.  Some of the early signs to look out for these heat-related illnesses are feeling tired, headache, muscle cramps, excessive sweating, weakness, etc.  

  1. Prepare an emergency contact list to stay connected

When your loved ones are alone at home, family caregivers have to stay connected with the caregiving network of friends and nearby neighbors.  It is helpful to place an emergency contact list nearby to get help getting connected when there is an immediate need.  

  1. Dress appropriately 

During summer, it’s crucial to have a senior’s wardrobe filled with loose-fitting and light-colored clothing.  The clothes should be lightweight, made of natural fabric, or cotton material to reduce sweating.
