Being a caregiver for seniors can be a rewarding job, but taking care of people for a long period of time can be stressful. Caregiver burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion. Your health and well-being matter as much as the person you are caring for. It’s important to recognize the signs of caregiver burnout so you can get the help you need when it’s needed most.
What are the Signs & Symptoms of Caregiver Burnout?
The signs of caregiver burnout are very similar to those of depression and stress. This can look like:
- Physical and emotional exhaustion.
- Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy.
- Withdrawing away from family and loved ones.
- Changes in sleep patterns.
- Irritability and frustration towards others.
- Getting sick more often than before.
- Changes in appetite and losing/gaining weight.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you may be in a caregiver burnout. Everyone’s experience with burnout is different. You may feel angry, anxious, guilty, or alone; all of these feelings are normal during a burnout. It’s important you recognize these feelings and reach out for help when needed. It is important during this time to take care of yourself. If you are not caring for yourself you cannot effectively take care of your client.
How Can You Prevent Caregiver Burnout?
There are plenty of ways you can take care and prevent burnout. Giving yourself a break can be extremely beneficial, if you’re not sure what to do here are some tips you can try to give yourself that much needed break.
- Focus on self care: Having a consistent self care routine can be extremely important. It’s a great way to feel good about yourself again. Self care can be many different things. Self care can include yoga, reading a book, journaling, taking a daily walk, or meditation.
-
- Get regular exercise
- Find someone you trust: It can help to talk about your feelings with someone you know you can trust. That person could be a family member, friend, or mental health professional. Talking in a safe space with someone you know won’t judge you can be a big help.
- Spend time outdoors in nature
- Set realistic goals: It is important to accept you may need some assistance when caring for your client. This is especially important if you’re trying to balance other responsibilities. You may need to take a break or step back for a while. If your workload is too overwhelming or you can’t handle it anymore you can reach out to your home care agency for help.
Caregiver Appreciation
We understand the importance of mental health for our caregivers and that caregiver burnout can happen at any time. We appreciate our caregivers for all the hard work they do and try our best to show appreciation whenever we can. One thing we do annually to celebrate our caregivers is host our Caregiver Appreciation Day. The event includes raffle prizes, food, ice cream, and presenting our Caregiver of the Quarter award. We also give out awards throughout the year for caregivers going above and beyond as well as longevity awards to help our caregivers feel appreciated.
