Receiving an Alzheimer’s diagnosis can be overwhelming for both individuals and their families. Alzheimer’s disease affects memory, thinking, and behavior, often changing daily routines and creating new challenges that can feel difficult to navigate alone. While the journey is different for every family, one thing remains constant: compassionate support can make all the difference.
At Charter Oak Home Care, we understand that caring for someone with Alzheimer’s is about much more than helping with daily tasks. It’s about preserving dignity, providing reassurance, and creating an environment where clients feel safe, valued, and understood.
Understanding Life After an Alzheimer’s Diagnosis
For many individuals, one of the most difficult parts of an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is adjusting to the idea of accepting help. Many people worry about losing their independence or becoming a burden to their loved ones.
We met with one of our caregivers Michele and her client Eugene to get some perspective. We asked what she has learned about helping clients feel safe, comfortable, and supported after receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s.
“Just have patience and reassure them that everything will be okay. I’ve noticed that they do not like having help, but you have to give them the reassurance that they are still home and have support if needed.”
The Emotional Side of Caregiving
Alzheimer’s caregiving can be both rewarding and challenging. Caregivers often develop deep bonds with the individuals they support, but the role can also be emotionally and physically demanding.
Providing care requires flexibility, empathy, and resilience. Caregivers must navigate changing behaviors, memory loss, and moments of confusion while continuing to provide comfort and stability.
When we asked Michele how she maintains her own well-being while caring for someone with Alzheimer’s, she shared a simple but meaningful routine:
“After a long day, I go by the river and relax, de-stress, and take a moment to breathe.”
Taking time to recharge allows caregivers to continue providing the highest level of compassionate care. Whether it’s spending time outdoors, connecting with loved ones, exercising, or simply enjoying a quiet moment, self-care helps caregivers stay emotionally balanced and present.
Creating Moments That Matter
Although Alzheimer’s disease changes many aspects of life, meaningful connections are especially important. A familiar song, a favorite meal, a walk outdoors, or simply sitting together and sharing a conversation can create moments of joy and comfort.
Caregivers play an important role in helping individuals maintain routines, engage in activities they enjoy, and remain connected to their communities and families.
At Charter Oak Home Care, we believe that every person living with Alzheimer’s deserves care that honors their unique story, preferences, and dignity.
